![]() In 1978, in the year of Maggie Erickson's passing, on November 18th, Jim Jones's Peoples Temple followers committed mass suicide in Jonestown, Guyana - where they had moved, from San Francisco, as a group. The used car market boomed (as did a black market in used cars). Some dealerships had to close and others expanded their repair shops. Detroit - the main hub of car manufacturing - was ordered to free up assembly lines for military production. A tire rationing program had begun the month before. ![]() In 1942, she was 48 years old when due to World War II, automobile production in the United States was stopped on February 1st. It said that "no person shall manufacture, sell, barter, transport, import, export, deliver, or furnish any intoxicating liquor except as authorized by this act" and defined intoxicating liquor as any beverage containing more than 0.5% alcohol by volume. ![]() Formally called the National Prohibition Act, the Volstead Act enabled law enforcement agencies to carry out the 18th Amendment. In 1920, when she was 26 years old, the Volstead Act became law. ![]() The President who championed a woman's right to vote also created a day in their honor. Anna Jarvis had championed a Mother's Day for years but Congress had joked a few years earlier that then they would have to proclaim a "Mother-in-law's Day" as well. In 1914, she was 20 years old when President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother's Day, the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honor mothers. The Panic of 1893, and the resulting depression, hit coal miners hard and the miners only struck for 8 weeks - they couldn't afford to live without their wages any longer. In 1894, in the year that Maggie Erickson was born, on April 21st, a coal miners' strike closed mines throughout the central United States.
